Idea behind the work: Belinda Longsden is an artist friend of mine, who used to have a studio just along the corridor from me at Makers Dozen, Wolverhampton. We met at Pit Stop Café one morning and I noticed a chequered flag had been painted on the red wall. Beneath the flag was a black sofa, so immediately here were three colour schemes that suggests greyhound racing jackets – and the gamble of life itself! I asked Belinda if she would be willing to have me photograph her sitting on the sofa. She agreed and the next day turned up with an umbrella with a union flag design on it, bringing to the table another greyhound racing jacket colour – blue. When editing the photo of Belinda At Pit Stop Café, I coloured Belinda’s scarf orange – the last of the greyhound racing jacket colours I often use in my art.
